POS – Point of sale systems are software sets which process orders, record customer data and process payment. Large retailers have had networked computer systems to perform this task since the 1990s. The early small business tool was basically a really expensive box that just processed payment cards. As those systems evolved it became more possible to simultaneous store customer and transaction data, while processing payment. The technology has become much more accessible in the last decade with tools like Square reducing both the software complexity and hardware requirements to efficiently process payments and record customer data.
